RavenGames News Archives
January 2002
I finally have some news about the release of SOFII. It has been pushed to the Spring of this year without an exact date. The reason for the delay is for the "extra time required by the game's developer, Raven, to enhance and perfect the title's random mission generator and multiplayer component". I think it'll be worth the wait since they did agree to put multiplayer into the game. Let' s give them time to make sure it works properly. We don't need another WWII Online fiasco... lol. | SoF2 release date moved... | 4:53 by MarcusZ |

The offical Jedi Outcast page from LucasArts have 2 new questions/answeres in our FAQ-section.
3.11 Can you use your fists as a weapon in Jedi Outcast?
> The default weapon in Jedi Outcast is the stun baton, not the fists. Kyle begins the game with a stun baton and his trusty Bryar Blaster Pistol. As such, there is no need to resort to fisticuffs.
2.07 Are you planning to have cheat protection for Jedi Outcast multiplayer?
> Id Software® has put a lot of anti-cheat protection code into Quake III: Team Arena™ and we've implemented all of it into Jedi Outcast's code base along with a few other cheat protection features. In addition, there are menu options to kick players from servers and to password protect your server so only friends and trusted players can join in the event that cheating does occur.
Click here, if you`d like to read the full FAQ.

The TimeScape Soldier of Fortune 2 Mod has officially opened its doors on PlanetSoldier!
Heres project director Orionark explaining the mod...
Timescape is a very much story-driven mod about humanity's history, and one man's travel through it. Samson Retronelli is a recovery soldier for Ungrad Recovery, a military ship recovery corporation established in order to retrieve valuable minerals, ships, or war officers from dangerous situations. Samson is stationed on the Recovery-7, in SSector74a. His ship recieves a distress call from the Velarian, a military recon ship stationed in the same sector. The Velarian had reported a swarm of GOID (Gastrothermal Overstimulated Indestructable Dragon, the opposing alien race in the MOD. Discovered around 2037, they were named the most dangerous menace to human-kind by the Humane Council.) ships pursuing them. Their weapons were disabled and they were losing speed. The Recovery-7 hyperjumped to the specified distress location and found the Velarian floating, dark and inactive. An escape pod was caught on radar, and the Recovery-7 pulled it in. The captain of the Velarian, Boone, cautiously stepped out of the pod. The captain of the Recovery-7 began questioning him, and soon the entire story of the GOID presence unfolded. The ship's alarm sounded before the two were able to finish. The GOID swarm had returned, and was closing fast. This is where the player begins his first mission (rightfully named the Training mission) as Retronelli.

LucasArts released five new screenshots yesterday. You can see them in Jedi Knight 2-World's screenshot-section!
Furthermore, the official FAQ was updated as well: 1.06 Who is doing the music for Jedi Outcast? The game score will be composed primarily of existing music pieces from John Williams' vast Star Wars music library. Some additional pieces of music were required for specific game situations and that music was inspired by John Williams' music and arranged by Clint Bajakian.
2.06 What kind of cinematics will be featured in Jedi Outcast? Jedi Outcast features both in-engine cinematics done by Raven Software and fully rendered cinematics done by Creat® studios.
3.10 Will there be cheat codes available in Jedi Outcast? Yes. The standard Quake III: Team Arena engine cheat codes will be available in the single-player game. Cheats will include god mode, noclip, notarget, timescale and spawn. Source: Jedi Knight 2-World (German)Back to top

Games Fusion have done an interview with Kenn Hoekstra project administrator of the upcoming FPS based title named Soldier of Fortune 2 by Raven software. The interview covers various topics to do with the development of SOF 2 as well as some off topic questions to do with games development in general. Here's a cut:
GF: What kind of maps can we expect to see in single player and multiplayer? Will it mainly be large maps and areas due to the implementation of the ARIOCHE Terrain System?
There’s a wide variety of maps in Soldier of Fortune II ranging from jungles, to snowy mountains to city streets with different looks from all over the world. Only a few maps use ARIOCHE in single player, but we’ve put the Team Arena code to good use as well with some rather large outdoor environments. ARIOCHE’s main function is as part of the Random Mission Generator.

| Atomic interviews Kenn Hoekstra | 7:56 by foyleman |
Atomic - Maximum Power Computing, interviewed Kenn from Raven regarding SOF2. There are some nice screenshots and good questions such as:
BW: Will SoF2 ship with a level editor?
KH: The level editor and SDK won't fit on the two CDs, but we are planning on having them available for download shortly after the game's release. Back to top
Well, that's the way I like it: First they release five new screenshots, then LucasArts updates the official FAQ. Here are the two new questions:
1.05 Will there be a separate, edited SKU of the game made specifically for non-U.S. territories? Every SKU of Jedi Outcast will be identical in terms of game content. The only possible difference in the SKUs would be language option related
3.09 Will Jedi Outcast feature a location-based damage system? Yes, Jedi Outcast features a sophisticated location-based damage and modeling system. Enemies will react to damage based on the affected area. Body and head shots, for example, do more damage than limb hits. You will also be able to destroy limbs with your lightsaber similar to what has been seen in the four films. (Obi Wan Kenobi's battle in the Cantina/Luke's hand, etc.)

| 3 Questions to Raven about Jk2 | 14:20 by MarcusZ |
MarcusZ from the German website Jedi Outcast TH cornered Kenn Hoekstra from Ravensoftware, too. He had 3 questions. And here are the answers:
Question: Need Jk2 2 CDs? (see SoF2, it's the same)
Kenn: The reason Soldier of Fortune 2 needs two CDs is because we’ve got three sets of textures for the game for low, medium and high resolution rendering. The entire second CD for SOF2 is textures. Jedi Knight 2 doesn’t pre-cache things the same way SOF2 does, so they didn’t need three versions of each texture.
Question: If Jk2 is too big for one CD after the 'gone gold status', is a DVD coming?
Kenn: unknown
Question: What is with editing tools etc? will it be simple to create mods, models, skins etc…?
Kenn: The tools are similar to Elite Force…same level editor/modeling system/skin system, etc. The game will be easily mod-able. It’s a question for LucasArts, though. I don’t know how their EULA is going to handle mod making. They haven’t really released a lot of details yet about that. Back to top
| The technology behind JK2 | 13:55 by RambOrc |
Axel Habermaier from JK2-World cornered Raven's Kenn Hoekstra with the question how the technologies behind Jedi Knight II and Soldier of Fortune II differ. This is the answer he got:
Jedi Outcast and Soldier of Fortune II share many technologies, including the ICARUS2 scripting language, the GHOUL2 modeling and animation system and a light styles system. The multiplayer code started out as shared technology, but the code bases were eventually split into two separate multiplayer games. Each game has its own unique AI system. Back to top

As reported by JK2-World, all Jedi Outcast cutscenes will be game engine renderings, don't await any movie-quality cutscenes with real actors like in Jedi Knight. Also, Jedi Knight II will be shipped on 1 CD only. As Kenn Hoekstra from Raven Software commented it: "I think everything will fit on one CD. I don’t see us needing two." Back to top
