New vs Old - Page conversions

June 04, at 18:48
Hi all,

this is a fast note that I'll be giving about the web & structure. Currently you're looking at the Old engine. Afaik, !Base is not ideal way to communicate with, even though my coding talents are good enough, but I prefer to work with vBulletin.

For that the reason vBulletin is active on the forums, how they're looking is just "Basic" and will change through the time. There for, please be patient because I'm still looking for a graphical designer to help me improoving all pages.

Then also included will be the all page conversions as included this on RavenClans.com, RavenFiles.com & RavenCommunity.net. RavenArchives.net will run this version of engine but all login and registrations will be disabled. Furthermore, I'll try to seek a way where I can input all or most of this news on the vB page/section.

So far this quick news, more will be following. You will be able to track most of this via our forums.

regards,

Heretic II Siege v3.0 Released!

March 19, at 09:58
Siege is one of the first fully realized attempts to bring a certain level of strategy and realism to the 3D shoot-em-up genre. Instead of your typical frag-fest, Siege presents the player with a more in depth and entertaining experience. This experience can most easily be summarized as a "First Person Warcraft". Siege attempts to bring intelligence and planning to the multiplayer FPS, traditionally the realm of mindless deathmatch. It combines entertaining gameplay, real world physics, balanced characters, numerous options, and many surprises.

The basic premise behind Siege is a confrontation between an attacking team and a defending team. The attacker’s goal is to besiege the defender’s castle and steal the crown. The defenders on the other hand, need to be able to hold off the attackers long enough, thereby effectively deterring the enemy from gaining control of the castle. If the crown is stolen within the allotted time, the attacker wins, if not, the defender wins. Depending on the number of players, this time limit can be set by the server, otherwise default time is usually around 30 minutes. The game is a race against time, and both sides have many tools at their disposal in order to insure victory. How effectively they use what they are given though will ultimately determine the outcome.

Version 3.0 Includes:

-New Ogles Player Class (See Class Section in H2Siege Website for more details)
-7 New Class Upgrades:
*Fighter - Disarm Upgrade
*Assassin - Backstab Upgrade
*Wizard - Mana Drain Upgrade
*Necromancer - Life Drain Upgrade
*Cleric - God Save Upgrade
*Succubus - Bloodfire Upgrade
*Ogle - Knock Out Upgrade
-New Castle vs. Castle Map!
-New Action Icon that indicates when you can interact with doors and with other objects.
-KO your opponents with your fist attack.
-Ability to command your Summoned Imp
-Updated Maps
-Various Fixes and Much More!

Visit the Heretic II Siege homepage here for downloads and more details about this mod!

Finally! We're up and running!

March 03, at 21:56
Hi everyone and welcome!
I am John the new owner of the Raven Community.
We took over a little while ago but after some problems with the content management system and then some more bugs and issues we finally have everything ironed out!

There is a ton of awesome information here and as a gaming freak I am excited to carry on the legacy of the previous owners and contributors.

Much will remain the same like informative information from Jorge and Col.J.P. and some things will change a little. A new CMS will be added in the relatively near future and the forum will change soon as well. Don't worry nothing will be lost. All of the content and posts will move as well.

Enjoy!

Kenn Hoekstra leaves Raven Software!

June 30, at 02:44

"I'm writing this open letter to announce my resignation from Raven Software effective Wednesday, June 30th and to let everyone know that this pending departure is both amicable and mutual. What can I say? It's been a hell of a ride.

In the past seven plus years I was fortunate enough to be able to contribute to twelve Raven Software titles alongside the most talented group of people I've ever had the good fortune to work with. I want to thank Raven for giving me the opportunity to start my career in game development and I send out my best wishes to everyone at Raven and Activision for their continued success. I know you'll all do well.

I'm sure the question many of you are asking is "why?" (Then again, maybe you aren't!) Put simply, I've reached a point in my life where it's time for me to move on to new challenges…to take some risks and make some time for a few things I've always wanted to do. I don't deal well with "what might have been" scenarios. That said, there are some shots I need to take and I believe now is the time for me to take them. The way I see it, if I don't do it now, I may never get the chance again."

More details can be found at Kenn's World.

Good luck Kenn!

Spot On: The game-resale crackdown

May 01, at 11:34
Some communities now require anyone selling used video games to give fingerprints for police records. The question is: why?

Some stores that buy used video games have begun taking their customers’ fingerprints and turning them over to police, but the stores say they’re just complying with local laws.

In addition to recording drivers license, telephone numbers, and addresses of customers who sell used games or consoles, some are routinely requiring a thumbprint. Retailers are collecting the information under a law intended to regulate pawn shops and make it easy for law enforcement officials to track down thieves who fence stolen goods. A number of states have such laws and Utah passed its own version just last month.

Brain Controlled Video Games Are Coming

April 19, at 13:46
A report from CBBC demonstrates the use of a video game controller used to manipulate the game world directly from the brain. In the game Mind Balance, a player dons a lightweight, wireless headset and helps the alien character Mawg walk a tight rope between sci-fi inspired buildings by focusing on left and right flashing boxes. If Mawg sways too much to the left, the player focuses more on the right box to counterbalance. Neither the game not controller are available for purchase, however, this first generation will enable researchers to create more sophisticated applications and devices for retail use.

Take a look at BBC News Round.

A new Heretic II skining site is now online at RavenCommunity. Their speciality is converting the skins of monsters and other characters from the game for use on the Corvus model. Ever wanted to be a plague elf, or a spreader? Ever envied the sexy leather outfit the mine overlords wear? Then this is the site for you!

Hexen II fire imp for Heretic II

April 19, at 13:46
Heretic II supports a monster that was never included in the finished game; the Hexen II fire imp. All you need is a model and a skin to use it in single player maps.
Previously, there were two ways of downloading a Hexen II imp model and skin to use with Heretic II single player maps. You could download all of the SIEGE files, or the version converted by TRIX here. The first option required downloading several megabytes; the second had a speckly grey skin that looked... well, questionable.
It turns out that the skin converted by TRIX simply had the wrong palette. You can now download the imp model and skin at RavenFiles!
The skin now has the correct palette, and the face has been modified to display better on the model. The model itself is the original
conversion by TRIX.

April 19, at 13:46
Well this news is more than 2 weeks old, but considering how little happens in the Heretic II scene any more, it's still kinda fresh... anyway, there is a new release of The Heretic Fortress (THF), 5.01 B, with mostly code fixes and enhancements. For more info, see this thread on the THF forums.

Cult Action Games: Heretic II

April 19, at 13:45
In the mid-1990's, Raven Software was an up and coming game developer who worked with a number of publisher on different types of games, from the top-down action game Take No Prisoners to the vehicle combat title Necrodome to the fantasy Gauntlet -like game Mageslayer. Yet it was the work on the fantasy first person action games Heretic, Hexen and Hexen II that gave Raven their highest profile in the game industry, thanks in large part to the use of id Software's Doom and (for Hexen II) Quake engines.
In 1997, Raven Software had their biggest turning point when publisher Activision purchased the developer. According to Raven Software's project administrator Kenn Hoekstra, "One of the reasons Activision purchased Raven was to secure the Heretic/Hexen franchise. We had just finished Hexen II for Activision when they acquired Raven in 1997 and we started work on the Hexen II Expansion Pack shortly thereafter."

However, the decision was made to move the fantasy action game franchise in a whole new direction for Raven's first official game for their new owner. "Rather than working on a Hexen III AND a Hexen II expansion pack at the same time, the decision was made to return to the Heretic name and make a sequel featuring Corvus, the main character from the original game."
