Heretic
Walkthrough And Strategy Guide
The Halls of Fear (E3M6)
From the start, walk ahead and jump down into the water
as soon as you can. Run around dodging the gargoyles, and pick up all
items. Be sure not to miss the quiver of crossbow bolts and the Tome of
Power. Once done with collecting, duck into the cave, where you can get
a Crossbow. Make sure you get rid of the critters in your immediate vicinity,
because as soon as you touch the Yellow Key, you'll get an Iron Lich to
fight. Once you're done with him grab the Dragon's Claw, then use the
teleport in the water to get back to the start point.
| |
Getting back to the start, this time walk the corridor
to its end, ready your Dragon's Claw, and open the Yellow Door. If you
don't feel up to fighting up to a dozen Sabreclaws and Weredragons at
once, watch out you don't venture to the far side of the room, this way
the critters in the back might not see you. Once done, throw the switches
and get out into the next corridor.
| |
For the first run, just clear out the corridor and get
to its other end.Watch for those banners on the wall, between them is
a hidden entrance to a secret corridor. Duck in there and start the cleanup
with the Ophidians in there, and then with the ones outside (it's always
easier dodging shots of enemies you can see).
| |
Throw the switches you find in the corridor, and by the
time you're finished with them you can get back to the first hallway and
grab the Green Key. Before you open that door though, we're going to collect
some more goodies.
From the point where you got the last key, look for the
2nd opening on your right. There's a Tome of Power, and if you jump into
a small, walled-off part of the water, you can find a secret door on the
western wall (just push around until you find it). In there's a Ring of
Invulnerability and a teleport that brings you up to a ledge for a Hellstaff
and some ammo.
| |
Time to use the newly risen bridge to get over to the
other side of the water. After a couple of steps, a wall will lower and
give you access to a tunnel with a couple of Weredragons, leading back
to the room behind the Yellow Door - with the difference there is now
a hidden alcove revealed, with a Bag of Holding in it.
Get back to the ledge and clean out the Golems. You'll
see a Phoenix Rod on a pedestal, be prepared before you take it, on both
sides doors will open and you get company in the form of Disciples of
D'Sparil.
| |
Now you should be equipped sufficiently for the adversaries
waiting for you behind the Green Door. The first big one is a Maulotaur,
if you have the Ring, a Tome and the Phoenix Rod, you'll have an easy
job, just activate the first 2 and fry him with the 3rd. There are some
- relatively - minor critters around like Ophidians and maybe Disciples,
just take them out in the same turn.
| |
Once done, hit the switch at the back of the (wet) courtyard.
Now you can climb the stairs for the Blue Key. As soon as you get there,
the water level in the courtyard will significantly decrease, revealing
a hidden room with the Wings of Wrath and some advanced weaponry, plus
a couple of Iron Liches to kill the time with.
| |
Once you had enough fun, go to the Blue Door and open
it. Some more lizard boys to crush under your heels and you're home free.
From the antechamber of the exit teleport you can acess an underground
corridor leading back to the cave where you got the Yellow Key. If you
go that far, you can get some new playmates and stuff to pick up. From
the same corridor, you can also access a lift that takes you up to the
room with all those Time Bombs (now towards the end of the level rather
of limited use).
| |
| |
Note: After getting the Green Key, you can take things
in any order you want. One of the times I played the map I opened the
door right away and let the Maulotaur chase me up the corridor all the
way to the Yellow Door room. There I dodged him and went down to the courtyard,
threw the switch, grabbed the Blue Key and went right to the tunnel with
the Weredragons. After busting them all I suddenly found myself face-to-snout
with the Maulotaur. I turned around and ran down to the pedestal with
the Phoenix Rod, and then went back to the courtyard behind the Green
Door and finished the critters there, then got behind the Blue Door and
cleared out the exit path, and from there came back to the pedestal and
then jumped down into the water for some health vials. At the vicinity
of the cave entry I turned around and guess who was breathing down my
neck... :)
